Westjet is looking for approval from the Canadian government to expand their flights from Calgary and Edmonton to Hawaii.
The Calgary-based airline, which uses 737s exclusively, wants to lease a 757 from North American Airlines and use the plane during the peak period between February 12th and April 30th.
In the past, Westjet has flown to Honolulu and Maui but were unable to sell all the seats in the 737s due to weight and fuel restrictions.
Westjet’s Robert Palmer tells 660News, the airline is always looking at creative ways to grow the company and serve their guests.
He says at this time, they have no plans to migrate the format to anything more in the near future and believe their single fleet is the right thing for the time being.
He says they want to show they have the flexibility and committment to step up and assert their competitive advantage wherever it’s threatened.
Under the terms of the lease, North American Airlines would provide the pilots, flight attendants and maintenance engineers but a Westjet representative would also be on the flights.
