New ice rink opens for Calgarians

Flames Community Arenas officially opened their third ice rink Saturday.

The $17 million project has been a 10 year group effort between various charities, committees and all three branches of government to meet a higher demand for ice surfaces.

Brian Fleming, of the Southwest Arena Expansion Committee, tells 660News they’ve done more than just add a rink.

“The $17-million project is kind of pricey for a rink, but what we’ve done is already built the infrastructure for a fourth rink,” he said, “Someday when a group of people want to add a fourth rink, it’s going to be much more straight forward.”

Fleming adds they’re pretty close to meeting the needs of the hockey community, and he doesn’t expect to need a fourth rink until the city sees a major population growth.
