Police budget takes big cut

Calgary’s police force has slashed their expenditures by another $2-million.

In November, the police force announced they had cut $2-million from their budget, but it wasn’t enough and the city has asked them to trim some more to help out with its nearly $50-million shortfall.

The chair for the police commission, Mike Shaik, says they won’t remove any officers from the force.

He says they’ll instead have to cut corners elsewhere.

“We’re going to reduce this year. It may have an effect because we are not sending people on training.”

He adds they’ve also reduced their travel and fuel budgets.

Shaik says hopefully they’ll make up some of the revenue from the speed on green cameras which netted the police service $2-million in revenue last year.
