Fire rips through oil well in central Alberta

No one is injured after a massive oil well fire in central Alberta raged for over 17 hours.
Davis Sheremata, with the Energy Resources Conservation Board, tells 660News the blaze was sparked around 10:20 a.m. Friday at Daylight Energy Ltd’s sour oil well 11 km southwest of Lodgepole.
“A crew from Daylight Energy was doing well-servicing on the sour oil well. There was a leak of oil that caught on fire and the crew immediately evacuated the area and initiated their emergency response plan,” he says.
The fire was extinguished around 3:30 Saturday morning.
He says there was no threat to public safety during the incident.
Sheremata says they’ve shut down operations at the site while they look into the fire.
“We’ve got investigators on site who are talking to Daylight staff, looking at their records and inspecting their equipment to determine exactly why the fire happened and whether the company was operating the well in accordance to our regulations,” he says.
Sheremata says operations could be put on hold for several weeks.
