Calgary’s weed control efforts to increase

There’s still snow on the ground, but the city is already preparing to spray a lot more herbicide this year.

A surging population of noxious weeds led to a 60 per cent bump in city herbicide use last year, with more of the same expected in 2011.

Calgary pest control officials say the weed problem has been so bad that chemicals are the only way to prevent invasive plants from overrunning local parks and damaging roads.

The Canadian Cancer Society tells The Calgary Herald they’re opposed to chemical use because of evidence linking it to a bigger cancer risk.
