Getting “down to earth” in meal planning

Ten Calgary restaurants are serving up some homemade dishes, this week, with all of the food grown and produced within 400km of the city.

It’s part of “Down to Earth Week,” an annual celebration of sustainable living.

Stephanie Jackman, founder and president of Respect for the Earth and All People, tells 660News using locally grown food actually reduces greenhouse gas emissions.

“The enviromental impact of having food that’s grown really close to home is much smaller than if you’re trucking it in from all over the continent or flying it in from other places in the world,” says Jackman.

Despite the criteria to participate, diners won’t lack for variety.

“Really the local features are different at each of the restaurants,” adds Jackman.  “But what they have in common is that they’re all from within 400km of the city, which is tough to do in March in Calgary, and they’re really showcasing the best in sustainable agriculture.  So you can go down and try lots of delicious features that are organic and grown locally.”

The restaurants participating in the food fest from March 28th through April 1st include Boxwood; Dairy Lane; deVille; gratitude cafe Inc; NOtaBLE; Open Range: River Cafe; The COUP; Vin Room and Wild Rose Brewery & Taproom.
