LOWER MAINLAND (NEWS1130) – TransLink still doesn’t have the money for the Evergreen Line, but that’s not stopping the transit authority from looking for input on a rapid transit line to UBC. Several potential designs are being floated, using either bus rapid transit, light rail transit, or rail rapid transit.
Rail rapid transit would be the most expensive. It would include a tunnel from Commercial Drive to UBC at a cost of $3.2 billion. That option would also carry the most passengers — up to 146,000.
One of the cheapest options would be to add more buses along the existing route along the Broadway corridor and would cost $325 million. It’s expected that would attract about 75,000 riders per day.
The planning for the UBC line comes despite the fact TransLink still hasn’t come up with its $400 million share for the long awaited Evergreen Line. The transit authority is still looking for your input.
