Calgary’s drive to become Canada’s cultural capital could get a financial boost.
The Calgary Stampede and Calgary Public Library both turn 100 this year, which council says helps the city’s application.
Alderman Brian Pincott is taking a motion before council Monday to boost Calgary’s bid for the distinction from just over $650,000 to about $2-million.
He tells The Calgary Herald if Calgary wins, the federal funding coming from the award should be used to promote the city’s vibrant arts community on a national level.
The 2012 Cultural Capital of Canada will be announced in October.
