Balzac sour gas plant to shut down

A condemned sour gas plant north of the city is set to shut down.

The closure will affect around 90 workers, who will lose their jobs in about a year’s time.

In just two weeks, the 50-year-old Balzac sour gas plant will begin a long decommissioning process that includes shutting down the wells, draining the lines and de-energizing the plant.

The Calgary Herald reports declining volumes as well as the need for a pricey upgrade led to the decision to close the plant.
