Your health records at your finger tips

The province says Albertans will soon be able to have a better understanding of their health with the launch of a new program called “My Health.”

Speaking at a news briefing Wednesday morning in Edmonton, Health and Wellness Minister Gene Zwozdesky said this is the first step in allowing people to have access to their own health records.

“This is an extremely important beginning to something,” said Zwozdesky. “By the time it is completed over the next few years,” (it) “will provide you with outstanding access to information about the health system, and equally importantly, information about your own health.”

Albertans will be able to access those health records with something as simple as their smartphone.

“Consider the health record not unlike a health diary, where you yourself will be inputting things like your own blood pressure readings, your own insulin level readings, your height, your weight, your immunization record and so on,” adds the Health Minister.

Zwozdesky says by the time the entire project is fully functioning in four years, it will come with a price tag of $33-million but says the cost is a small price to pay for the amount of impact it will have on the health care system.
