Teachers rally in protest of budget shortfall

Over 300 people crowded into the plaza by Eau Claire Market on Saturday afternoon to protest against the cuts to education.

The Calgary Board of Education said last month it’s looking at laying off  374 employees to deal with a $62-million-dollar budget shortfall.

Those in attendance were carrying signs that said “Cuts hurt kids” and “Where is the oil money going?”

Even with the light rain, the crowd was focused on the goal of protesting.

A young man in grade 11 tells 660News, kids are already feeling the cuts.

“For example the increased class sizes have severely damaged people’s education. I hear my friends complaining about it, I’ve had problems with it. It’s just generally detrimental to the learning process.”

Others say the province can’t jeopardize the future of education and compromise their future and they’ll stand up to the board of  education and the province.
