Losing a run at the mayor’s chair will cost you.
Former alderman Bob Hawkesworth has a $55,000 debt eight months after losing the civic election last fall.
He’s holding events this month to try to pay it off.
The city’s Chief Returning Officer Barb Clifford tells the Calgary Herald that with such poorly written election rules, it’s unclear when he needs to repay his debt.
He can only pay off $10,000 of the debt with his own money.
Hawkesworth reportedly spent $345,000 on the campaign.
