Calgary Economic Development launches labour campaign

A new campaign designed to attract workers and business will soon get underway in Calgary.

Calgary Economic Development says according to numbers provided by the Province, there will be a need to fill 30,000 jobs in this city over the next 10 years.

Director of Marketing Mary Moran says the CED campaign will start nationally first, targetting Eastern Canada.

“Really the reason we’re going into the national markets first is because, we know those people are more able to move more quickly,” Moran tells 660News. “As opposed to some of the international markets where there is an immigration issue that takes — at best case scenario — three to nine months to get through.”

She says there’s motivation to recruit workers based on recent unemployment figures.

“If we continue on that trend then we’re going to be facing labour issues sooner than we ever anticipated,” adds Moran.  “People attraction is the majority of it.  We’re still looking at attracting additional businesses that are aligned with some of the emerging sectors that are driving some of the economic growth in our city. And so, there are plenty of opportunities, or forecasted plenty of opportunities, for both the people in region and as well as out of the province.”

Moran says they’re trying to create some intrigue and urgency that there are opportunities to be had in Calgary, noting that even with increased migration from other provinces, we will still find ourselves with a labour shortage, meaning the program may eventually have to be expanded to an international level.
