Calgary fire fighter charged with manslaughter

A Calgary fire fighter and military officer has been charged with manslaughter in connection to the death of a soldier in Afghanistan.

Major Darryl Watts and Warrant Officer Paul Ravensdale were both charged earlier this week in the death of Corporal Joshua Baker on February 12th, 2010.

Four others were injured in the mine training exercise. It is alleged that the proper safety procedures were not followed.

Watts and Ravensdale are also charged with negligent perormance of a military duty and four counts of unlawfully causing bodily harm.

Watts is a 10-year veteran of the Calgary Fire Department and has served as a reservist with the King’s Own Calgary Regiment for 15 years.
