What’s next for our Canadian troops?

With the Canadian combat mission in Afghanistan down to its final days, some Canadian troops are facing a new reality.
In the coming months, they will be re-deployed from the scorching summer heat in Kandahar to bone-chilling cold in the Canadian arctic.
In bidding farewell to Canadian troops in Kandahar this past week, Defence Minister Peter MacKay noted the next big effort for the Canadian forces will be protecting Canadian sovereignty in the arctic.
Exercise Nanook begins in August with our Canadian soldiers getting a foothold near Baffin and Ellesmere Islands. It’s a mission that involves more than a thousand Canadian troops, CF-18 fighter jets, transport and surveillance aircraft, a warship and infantry companies from Alberta and Quebec.
The Calgary Herald says they’ll be getting some help from Inuit Reservists, who have extensive experience dealing with the frigid far north.
