Mudslide shuts down part of Highway 1

GOLDEN (NEWS1130) – A massive mudslide has shut down Highway 1 between Golden and the BC-Alberta border.  The slide, which is made up of thick mud, rocks, and trees, came down overnight near Yoho National Park.

It is about six metres deep and about 70 metres in length.  Luckily, no one was hurt.

Mark Merchant with Parks Canada says the area has been assessed and engineers say it’s far too unstable.

The road is expected to be re-opened by 2pm Sunday.

“They saw that we need to start scaling rocks.  So that means starting to chip away the loose rock so they can re-stabilize the slope.  Once that happens and they’re satisfied that the slope is stable then we have to remove the debris that is on the road.”

Merchant adds drivers heading in that area should give themselves a lot of extra time.  “You’ll be re-routed at Castle Junction, south at Highway 93 south to Radium.  And if you’re heading west from Golden you’ll be stopped at Golden and you’ll be taking Highway 95 southbound to Radium.”

Parks Canada is reminding travellers to obey all the speed limits in the national parks and to obey all the detours.
