More than a game of chicken

A Forest Lawn landlord got quite the surprise when he went to clean the basement of his business rental property.
“What had happened was we received a call from a landlord who was going to go in and re-rent their property,” Desiree Arsenault of the Humane Society tells 660News. “So essentially what happened was they went down to go and check out the property and found the chickens in the basement.”
Chickens, as in 121 abandoned hens that were suffering from dehydration.
“In this case, it’s considered abandonment,” adds Arsenault. “They’ve been left behind. They had a lack of proper food, water and shelter, and so we needed to take them into our care to make sure they were going to be ok.”
It’s not the standard type case that the Humane Society deals with in the city.
“We don’t see too many livestock animals here within the city of Calgary,” notes Arsenault. “It’s very rare that we do get the phone calls. So with the 121 chickens, what we will do next is we will start contacting local rescues, local farms and see if we can find them a place to live.”
In the meantime, the Humane Society would like to hear from anyone who has information as to who was keeping, and left, the chickens in the basement.
