Charges expected shortly in baby attack

Charges are expected to be laid sometime Sunday, possibly in the morning, after a horrific attack in Cranston, in the city’s southeast.
Paramedics rushed a six-month-old baby boy to hospital with stab wounds around 4 o’clock Saturday morning.
One man, who police describe as ‘agitated’ at the time of his arrest, remains in custody after being taken from the scene.
Police say he’s the only suspect in the case that has shocked even veteran first responders.
“As hardened as you can be, sometimes these types of scenes can really soften you up,” says Duty Inspector Paul Stacey.
He tells 660News such an attack on an infant is unlike anything most officers have ever dealt with.
Stacey says those who responded to the scene have now been ordered off the job to give them time to try to cope with what they were faced with.
The baby boy remains in serious, but stable condition in hospital.
“Ultimately he’s going to be alright. The emergency staff at the hospital are absolutely excellent, as was EMS, so credit them all the way.”
Meantime, Inspector Stacey says, police have talked to the baby’s mother and determined she is not a suspect.
He says the man in custody is the only suspect in the case.
The house will remain cordoned off for the police investigation.
“We will be holding it until we can complete a search warrant for the forensic evidence that we may or may not find in the house,” says Stacey.
