City suspends Spay/Neuter Program after falling behind

A popular program at the city to help cash-strapped pet owners spay or neuter their pet has been put on hold.
That announcement from city officials after hearing municipal facilities are 200 applications behind.
Director of Animal and Bylaw Services Bill Bruce says he is very pleased with the popularity of the program.
Since it’s launch in October of 2010, they’ve managed to complete 685 surgeries.
He says on average they are able to complete 30 to 40 sugeries a week.
“You know as always I would like to see more done, but we work within the capacities we have,” says Bruce. “I thinking spaying and neutering is some of the most important things we do.”
He says usually they like to see one or two days a week dedicated to the program, while they try to take care of the other animals in the shelter.
Bruce adds low-cost programs are still available through other foundations around the city.
The director says it’s too soon to tell how long it will take to start taking applications again, he’s hoping it will be as soon as possible but anticipates sometime in the fall.
