Province renews funding for youth justice program

The province is restoring funding to a restorative justice program.

The Stelmach government had planned to cut $351,000 in funding to the provincial program.  Last year, $25,000 worth of that government cash ended up with Calgary Community Conferencing.

The money goes towards a program for about 75 young offenders and has a first year success rate of 85 per cent in which the youngsters do not re-offend. Typically they’ve committed offences such as vandalism, robbery and assault.

The Calgary Herald reports the program brings offenders face to face with their victims to see the results of their actions.

In addition, proponents of the program say it also helps the victims who are better able to deal with the impact of the offense.
