Campers ignoring bear spray law

A Banff warden says she’s surprised at the number of people they’ve charged with disobeying a requirement to carry bear spray in the area the last few months.

The Calgary Herald reports eleven tickets with fines between $250 and $500 have been handed out since the rules came into effect July 10th.

The warden says, even though the bear spray requirement was a first for the park, they thought most trail users would have noticed the signs or heard about it in the media.

The requirement for bear spray was lifted Thursday, along with a ban on cyclists around Lake Minnewanka, because of changes in bear feeding habits this time of year.
