Police set fire to restaurant

Calgary police started a fire in a northwest restaurant Tuesday morning to help heat up the investigation into a cold case.

Investigators returned to the scene of a five year-old murder case for a rare type of reenactment.

In March of 2006, 41 year-old Brenda Myers was murdered at what was then known as Madison’s Cafe, and someone set fire to the restaurant.

Homicide Sergeant Grant Miller says with the building slated for demolition, investigators appreciate the rare opportunity to reignite their case.

They were able to test the fire for temperature and determine how quickly it spread.

“It’s not uncommon for us to return to a crime scene and try to maybe reenact in our own minds and with several smaller pieces but not, to my knowledge, we have never lit a building on fire,” says Miller.

Miller says the fire should help police piece together a timeline for the night of the murder and adds, they’re investigating a person of interest.
