Sales tax would boost so called Alberta advantage

An internationally renowned economist and the Director of the School of Public Policy at the University of Calgary says it’s time the Alberta government seriously looked at introducing a sales tax.
Professor Jack Mintz tells 660News a sales tax would not only improve the province’s revenue stream, but would allow it to lower personal and corporate tax rates.
Mintz says lower tax rates would act like a magnet, attracting new business’s to the province, helping diversify the economy.
He says 140 countries around the world have either a sales of value added tax, as do all province’s and territories in Canada.
Mintz says politically, a sales tax might be a tough sell in Alberta but if properly explained, it could fly and would also ease the revenue spikes the government has to deal with because of fluctuating energy prices.
