Ward 12 Alderman Shane Keating identifies a perceived disconnect between the bylaw in place and the ongoing “Occupy Calgary” protest.
Keating tells 660News, the whole essence of the demonstration is that they occupy space so that makes it unique compared to any other demonstration or protest where tenting has been allowed.
He says the city has been very responsible along with the protestors and feels they’re allowing the protests but are not enabling it in any way.
Keating says so far the demonstrators have been very responsible and cooperative with police and Bylaw Services.
He does add however, he doesn’t feel Olympic Plaza is the right place to hold the demonstration and believes it should be moved to St. Patrick’s Island.
Keating says the city doesn’t see this as making an exception but is trying to respect the unique circumstances of the protest.
He says it’s doubtful the city will be loosening its bylaws for future protests.
