Curbside composting on the way

Calgary will likely try out curbside composting, adding green bins to the black and blue ones already in place for garbage and recycling.
The city’s committee on utilities and environment is recommending council approve a pilot project offering curbside composting to Calgarians.
Should council approve the idea, 75-hundred homes will use green composting bins for food and yard waste starting in March 2012.
The pilot project recieved unanimous approval at a committee meeting Wednesday, citing 85 per cent support from Calgarians in a recent survey by Ipsos-Reid.
Jamie Duncan with Ipsos-Reid says there were a few objections at the meeting.
“The cost, and there was some concern around the number of carts in the home. We’ll have to go back and test public opinion on that now that we actually have a defined cart size,” says Duncan.
The green bins are smaller than the blue and black bins currently in use.
The cost, though not clear, could show up through taxes or user fees but expenses could be curbed by reduced frequency of pickup for garbage bins.
