High-speed crash kills one in S.E.

One man is dead and another clinging to life after a late-night, high-speed crash in the city’s southeast.
Police were called to the corner of 36th Street and 12th Avenue in Forest Lawn just after 10:30 p.m. Wednesday.
Investigators believe a 2007 Pontiac Grand Prix was traveling southbound along 36th, when its driver lost control slamming into a retaining wall.
The force of the impact was enough to rip the engine block out of the vehicle, sending it tumbling into a nearby yard.
The crash also ejected two men in their 20’s from the vehicle.
“Initial reports were some pedestrians had been hit,” says Duty Inspector Paul Stacey. “There were two people at the scene, that weren’t in the vehicle but transported by EMS in very critical condition.”
The men were rushed to Foothills Medical Centre.
One died from his injuries several hours later, while the second man remains in critical, life-threatening condition.
Police are unsure who was driving the vehicle.
“That stretch of road, is a 50 kilometre an hour stretch and to have that kind of damage, there appears to be some speed,” says Stacey. “We don’t know yet if alcohol was a factor but that’s obviously something that we’ll be looking at.”
