Man arrested on child porn charges

A Calgary man faces child pornography charges.

Police say the arrest comes after they were contacted by Facebook about inappropriate material.

58-year-old Clement John Murray is charged with accessing, possessing and distributing child pornography.

Staff Sergeant Steve Lorne says the Department of Justice just passed Bill C-22, a new law that makes it mandatory for internet service providers to report any type of child porn.

He says through Facebook, Murray was allegedly working as a mentor of sorts to other possible offenders teaching them what to say to prevent kids from speaking out against sexual abuse.

“While this case may raise some alarm about social networking sites, it shows how important it is for the public to be actively involved in reporting suspicious online activity or behaviour,” said ICE (Internet Child Exploitation Unit) Staff Sergeant Steve Lorne. “It also serves as a reminder to ensure we are talking to our kids about how they can stay safe while online.”

The 58-year-old will make his next court appearance on Thursday, December 22.
