Alberta RCMP say they had just started investigating the death of an inmate at Drumheller Institution when guards found another inmate dead in his cell.
Both men were taken to hospital and pronounced dead early Saturday.
Investigators have not said whether the deaths are suspicious, and autopsies to determine why they died are scheduled for next week.
Both men lived in separate, single cells in the federal prison, which houses nearly 600 medium and minimum-security inmates.
Derek Upton, 35, had been serving a life sentence for first-degree murder since 1994.
Nicholas Whynott, 24, was serving a sentence of six years and four months for drug offences.
