Council votes for raise but Mayor takes cut

Mayor Naheed Nenshi is promising to take a 10 per cent pay cut as city council votes in favour of a pay raise.
By a vote of 10-5, council voted in favour of receiving a 5.35 per cent hike based on a report filed by a citizen’s committee tasked with determining council compensation.
Nenshi voted against the raise.
He says he was surprised to learn he was as well compensated as he is compared to any other mayor in Canada.
“I do believe that a reduction of my salary base pay is appropriate however it is not possible, according to the report, to reduce my pay without also reducing the pay of the alderman and I don’t feel comfortable making that statement,” said the mayor.
He plans on donating ten per cent of his base pay back to the city or a charity, which could equal to $20,000.
Nenshi adds he reserves the right to change his mind.
