Tenants forcing suites to shut down

Griping neighbours may be to blame for those having trouble finding a basement suite to rent in Calgary.

According to The Calgary Herald, most basement suites have been forced closed by the city occur after complaints from either residents of the home in question, or others living nearby.

The city then steps in and closes the suite if the home doesn’t have the proper zoning permit.

Inspectors have shut down nearly 3,800 suites in the past decade, mostly due to permit problems.

Of 380 closures last year, less than a dozen came as a result of health and safety concerns.
