Wind damage forces downtown closures again

Wednesday’s morning commute in the core is snarled thanks to wind damage.
Eighth Avenue S.W. between 6th and 7th Streets is closed to traffic and pedestrians due to debris falling from Western Canadian Place.
The Calgary Fire Department has also closed 6th Street S.W. between 8th and 9th Avenues as a precaution.
It’s the second time in the past few months wind has blown parts of signage off the building, also known as the Husky tower.
This time debris fell on vehicles in the area, one of which had its windshield completely caved-in.
City officials are hinting they will put building owners on notice after Tuesday’s events.
Battalion Chief Don Huska is hopeful to get the roads reopened by 10:00 a.m., but crews are waiting for daylight to re-evaluate the situation.
“Additional resources will be arriving along with building maintenance people and fire crews will then go up and evaluate the situation,” explains Huska.
Officials are still worried; members of the High Angle team spotted loose casing from the sign on the side of the building.
People downtown are telling 660News they’re concerned with the recent events.
“They’ve gotta fix it so it doesn’t happen again,” says Dennis who works downtown. “We are in a place where there’s a lot of wind.”
