Closures add to Catholic Board’s budget surplus

Calgary’s Catholic School Board is benefiting financially from the decision to board-up two of its schools.
Shutting down Holy Redeemer in Forest Heights and St. John in Hillhurst will lead to savings of about $1-million, leaving the board with a $7.5-million surplus on its $500-million budget for 2012-2013.
Trustees say the closures weren’t based on finances, but on dwindling attendance and long travel times for students.
A spokesperson tells The Calgary Herald the surplus will likely be put into lowering class sizes, and adding specialty programming.
