The waters remain muddied when it comes to the Wildrose party’s position on publicly-funded abortions.
Saturday, Wildrose leader Danielle Smith, who has previously said she’s in favour of de-listing abortion as a publicly-funded procedure, said as leader of the party a Wildrose government would not initiate legislation on the issue and that women would not be forced to pay for the service themselves. During a visit to a seniors centre in Calgary, Friday, she declined to give an update on her personal view on the matter.
But the issue won’t go away, thanks to a recent letter from the party’s Chief Administrative Officer claiming the Wildrose plans to hold a referendum on de-listing the procedure.
Smith denies a Wildrose government plans to hold a referendum on the issue. But she does acknowledge the party is crafting a plan for citizen-initiated propositions.
The party plans to release details about the concept next week.
