Vimy Ridge ceremonies overseas

Governor General David Johnston is in France along with 5,000 young Canadian high school students to participate in ceremonies Monday marking the 95th anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge.

As we’re reminded again by historian Ted Barris for the very first time on their own, Barris writes that Toronto Star reporter Greg Clark was among those who witnessed that battle.

“He remembers going up Vimy Ridge with Nova Scotians to the right of him and prairie Calgarians and Saskatonians to the left of him; he said in his diary that it was as if Canada were taking the ridge, sensing that this wasn’t a battle for King and Empire, it was a battle for Canada” says Barris.

There are no veterans of that three day battle left who will join the ceremonies in France Monday.
