Change could soon be coming to Alberta’s Wildrose Party following their loss Monday in the provincial election.
Leader Danielle Smith says her party may have to re-think some of their more controversial policies.
Smith may soften up the party’s stance on a lot of divisive issues that became stumbling blocks for the new provincial party.
“You can only govern with a mandate from the people and if the people aren’t interested in going a certain direction, you have to be the one to change,” she tells The Globe and Mail.
First on the chopping block could be her views on global warming.
She says a comprehensive policy may be needed after being quoted earlier as saying the science around climate change had not been settled.
Smith also wants party faithful to re-think their views on conscience rights.
They’ll also re-examine establishing an Alberta Pension plan as well as a provincial police force to one day replace the RCMP.
It’s a dramatic about-face for Smith who told reporters Monday night after her loss that she wouldn’t change a thing.
She’s hoping the policies will be revisited this fall at the party’s Annual General Meeting.
