Jasper Park Lodge evacuated due to fire

JASPER, Alta. – A fire at a historic hotel in Jasper National Park is out; and so is the water in the outdoor pool.

Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge general manager Markus Treppenhauer says about 40 guests and 100 staff were quickly evacuated from the main lodge building Tuesday afternoon when flames and smoke were seen coming from the roof.

The lodge’s on-site fire department, along with crews from the town of Jasper, took about three hours to douse the blaze near the chimney.

Treppenhauer says no one was injured and cleanup is underway.

He says one of the four fire trucks emptied the water from the outdoor pool to spray on the fire.

The main lodge houses the reception area, spa, fitness centre, meeting space, restaurants and shops as well as 20 of the property’s 400 guest rooms.
