U.S. President Barack Obama has injected a polarizing issue into the race for the White House, by declaring his support for gay marriage, after initially refusing to take a clear stand.
This is a big change in the stance for Obama, when he was running for the senate in 2004, he said he believed marriage should remain between a man and a woman, but today he made the change.
“It is important for me to go ahead and affirm that I think same-sex couples should be able to get married,” he said.
He said the big influence came from inside his home because his daughters Malia and Sasha couldn’t understand why gay couples were treated differently.
“It doesn’t make sense to them and frankly, that’s the kind of thing that prompts a change of perspective,” he added.
Obama said he’s confident more Americans will grow comfortable with gays and lesbians getting married.
In response, his likely opponent in this November’s election Mitt Romney supports same-sex rights for gay couples, but marriage isn’t one of them.
