The Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra is thinking outside the box, this weekend.
The symphony is staging: Play! A Video Game Symphony.
The CPO’s Helen Slater tells 660News, it’s hoped the shows will expose the symphony to a whole new audience.
“We do a number of things that are, I guess you could say non-classical,” says Slater. “But this is one of the most unique that we’ve done in quite a while. Yeah, it does tend to draw in a much different audience for us.”
But concert goers will get much more than being serenaded by the music from their favourite video games.
“We’ll have gaming stations set up so you can play some of your favourite games out in the lobby,” adds Slater.
Not to mention, no one will be wagging a finger at someone who decides to dress up for the shows, and not in the usual symphony attire, but — like the recent Comic & Entertainment Expo — in the theme of the occassion.
“Yes, it’s actually encouraged,” notes Slater. “And if you want to dress up for the concerts, you can get a discount … for this event at the Costume Shoppe here in Calgary as well.”
There is one show Friday at 8pm, and two more shows on Saturday at 2pm and 8pm.
