Albertas best educators honoured in Calgary

23 teachers and principals were recognized for excellence at the Hyatt Regency Hotel Saturday.
Among the teaching award recipients five are from Calgary including Kristy Martens and Danielle Spencer, both of Westmount Charter School.
Alberta Education public affairs officer Tim Chamberlain said when it comes to selecting the winners, location doesn’t matter.
“Once we receive all the nominations, they go to a selection committee and we get down to the final 23. With our major centers, you’ll find most of the nominations coming from places like Calgary and Edmonton,” said Chamberlain.
Chamberlain is pleased to see winners spread all across the province.
With these awards being handed out since 1989, Chamberlain notes there hasn’t been the need for a lot of changes.
“The program runs so very well, some minor tweaks here and there, but the event and the gala is such a fantastic event for these educators to be with their peers, with our sponsors and with the government representation,” said Chamberlain.
The winners receive a certificate of acknowledgement from Premier Alison Redford, access of up to $4,000 for professional development; the technology winners will get a package, which includes a smart board.
