The 48th Calgary Marathon is deemed a huge success after breaking records and passing fundraising goals.
More than 11,000 people participated in the marathon, the 5-km run and walk, and the kids marathon, to make it the largest road running event in the history of Calgary.
Chair of The Calgary Marathon Society Dan Ouimet, tells 660News they also exceeded funds expected to be raised in this year’s event.
“From the ScotiaBank Charity Challenge we’ve raised over $700,000 now and we’re hopeful it will grow up to the $800,000 range,” he adds.
The winner of the men’s marathon Bernard Onsare, ran 2:22:47 which is just over a minute faster than anyone has ever run the marathon in Calgary.
Tasha ran the five kilometre race with her family and says it was a great feeling crossing the finish line.
“Exhilarating! Lots of people cheering; there’s a big crowd. You don’t feel rushed or anything. There’s people walking, people running, people going their own speed,” she adds.
The original race in 1963 had only 19 men running through Glenmore Park.
