Southeast community shaken by groper

The south east Calgary community of Erin Woods has been rocked by reports of a serial groper.

There have been three brazen attacks in less then three weeks and Calgary police believe they are the work of the same man and are clarifying the brief details of each incident.

The first happened on the evening of June 7th when a 59-year-old woman was working in her garden.

The second, in the afternoon of Tuesday, June 26th, a 49-year-old woman was jogging in a park when she was approached from behind.

While the attack on a 30 year old woman Thursday night is considered very serious, it played out a little differently.

The victims in all three cases were approached and touched from behind, but the first two women were touched in a sexual manner and police consider them a groping.

Kevin Brookwell from Calgary Police Services, the woman assaulted most recently was not groped, but police assume sexual intent and believe it to be the same suspect.

“The victim was aware of someone behind her, felt a hand placed on her hip, and took immediate action as best described as a revere kick making contact with the suspect,” says Brookwell.

“When she turned around, the suspect had already run away.”

The K-9 unit and HAWCS helicopter were both called following the latest attack Thursday night on Erin Grove Place but failed to come up with any persons of interest.

Jewel has lived in the community for seven years and tells 660News her neighbours are frightened, “you know this happened in broad daylight.”

She adds, she has changed the way she goes about her day-to-day errands.

“Be aware and more cautious of suspicious things in the neighbourhood.”

Officers and investigators from the Sex Crimes Unit have stepped up the search for the suspect, who they assume lives within proximity to the attacks.
