A new benefit for Barley

Barley is finally getting the attention it deserves, according to some.

Health Canada has backed a claim that the grain helps reduce blood cholesterol.

Matt Sawyer, chairman of the Alberta Barley Commission tells 660News the announcement Thursday is terrific news for producers.

“Eating three grams of barley fibre helps reduce your cholesterol and prevents heart disease so we’re very excited; not only does barley make great beer but it also makes a good food product as well.” said Sawyer.

The health claim is expected to boost demand for barley food products and spur industry growth.
