They’re fast and female!

Close to 200 women of all ages will be converging on Canada Olympic Park on Saturday for the third annual Sports Day in Canada for Women.

Organizer Marie-Helene Thibeault points to a recent event as inspiration for the participants.

“You look at the Olympians who were just competing in the 2012 Games, our women’s team did amazing,” Thibeault tells 660News.  “It’s those kind of seeds of inspiration, and those role models, that then pave the way for future generations.”

The day’s guest speaker is 1992 Olympic gold medallist Kerrin Lee-Gartner, who won the women’s downhill ski event in Albertville, France.

The day starts with a zumba warm-up at 9 o’clock, and then the participants will get to select a sport for a one-and-a-half hour trial.  The events include Olympic sports like bobsleigh, luge, the skeleton and ski jumping, as well as more mainstream events like mountain biking, low-impact walking and trail running.

“Our target group for Sports Day in Canada is actually 8 to 88 years old,” says Thibeault. “So I think that should encompass almost a good chunk of our population.  And with respect to our youth programming which takes place the rest of the year, our core audience is actually 9 to 19 years old,” adds Thibeault, referring to her company’s Fast & Female program.

The cost to register is $40 for adults and $15 for juniors.
