Thirty-nine cyclists from Calgary and area are likely looking forward to getting out of town.
The peddlers will spend the next 9 days cycling to Lewiston , maine.
The President of Cancervive, Bill Gilliland, tells 660News each rider has raised $10,000 to participate in the marathon trip.
“Now the riders will be riding six hour shifts, 24/7. We’ll always have a team of seven or eight riders on the road, as we say until we get to Lewiston, Maine, on October 12th.”
It’s more than a cross-continent bike ride for the 39 cyclists.
“We’ll participate in the Dempsey Challenge,” says Gilliland, speaking of the team’s arrival in Maine, “which is a cancer fundraising event weekend with a walk and a bike ride. We’re flying 20 cancer warriors, who are people in Calgary fighting cancer right now, that will join us down there for the weekend activities.”
Proceeds from the event will go to cancer survivorship programs offered by the Canadian charity, Wellspring.
To participate, the 39 bike riders have each raised a minimum of $10,000, 100 per cent of which will go towards the charity. Over the past 7 years, Cancervive has raised over $1.6 million.
