Gasoline prices have been going up and down this week and the current gap is as much as 10 cents a litre between services stations in Calgary. Prices range from 98.9 cents a litre to $108.9.
Why the non-stop movement in prices and the gap?
Jason Toews, co-founder of Gasbuddy.com, tells 660News that some operators are trying to pad their bottom lines.
“What it looks like to me is margin restoration,” says Toews who says that based on the wholesale price of petrol, gas should be just above a dollar a litre at the moment. “They’re just trying to make a little bit more money on gasoline, where they’ve actually gone through a period where gas stations have been pretty competitive, making less money off gas.”
“Within in 10 to 14 days, we should see gas prices back down a little bit,” adds Toews. “But then again, it does depend on a lot of factors. If there’s a lot of international uncertainty, that can throw everything for a loop.”
The price of gasoline in Calgary is still well below the Canadian average of $1.20.4 a litre.
