Schools implement new lanyard ban after tragic incident

Rockyview schools are considering a new ban on lanyards after a student was almost strangled to death by one last week.

Education Minister Jeff Johnson announced Friday, all schools in Alberta would be banning lanyards; currently used for hall and washroom passes, as well as identification.

A Grade 3 student was taken to Alberta Children’s Hospital in critical condition last Wednesday after a lanyard around his neck became stuck in a washroom stall.

The boy was in critical but stable condition as of Friday.

The Calgary Herald reports crisis response team members are returning to the school Monday to help classmates deal with the incident.
