Police push justice minister on demerits for distracted drivers

Alberta police chiefs have now sent a resolution to the province’s justice minister demanding distracted drivers be issued demerit points.

They feel a $172 fine isn’t enough to discourage motorists from breaking the rules, and possibly endangering others on the road.

Jonathan Denis says he’s open to the idea, but won’t commit to anything until he sees the numbers.

The Calgary Sun reports six provinces currently issue demerit points along with distracted driving offences.
