Calgary could see up to 20 cm of snow this week

Have you been enjoying the spring-like weather? Maybe took in a drink on a patio or two? Well, in typical Alberta fashion, conditions are expected to swing once again.

Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) has issued a special weather statement for the City of Calgary, saying there is potential for “significant” snowfall mid-week.

Snow is expected to start Tuesday evening and continue through Wednesday, according to the weather agency.

Calgary could see 10 to 20 centimetres by Thursday morning, with the most snow expected west of Highway 2 over higher terrain.

ECCC says the snow will be heavy and wet, and may be mixed with rain in some areas, so total snowfall amounts could vary widely.

CityNews660 meteorologist Michael Kuss says it all depends on the temperature.

“How much snow we see is super temperature-dependent because we are going to be right near freezing and this is why Tuesday — the last day of the month — is really up in the air. It could just be showers but some of the forecast models bringing in that cold air already in, so that could be snow as early as Tuesday,” he explained. “Wednesday looks like more of a certainty where we could see 10 to 20 centimetres of snow minimum, mixed in with rain on Wednesday.”
