Provincial budget to be dropped March 7

Premier Alison Redford used Twitter to announce her government’s spring budget will come down March 7, 2013.

“We’re taking time to make thoughtful but tough decisions given rapidly falling oil revenues. @DougHornerMLA will table Budget March 7”.

Minutes later, Government House Leader Dave Hancock sent out an email stating the spring session of the legislature will begin two days before that.

“As publicly announced by the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly, the spring legislative session will reconvene on Tuesday, March 5 for the continuation of the 1st Session of the 28th Legislature. During the fall session, our government passed 10 substantial pieces of legislation that continued to deliver the change Albertans voted for, including the introduction of new home warranties, a new single energy regulator, whistleblower protection for public servants, and the Education Act that improves Alberta’s already world-class education system.

Our spring session will be focused on protecting Alberta’s gains and building for the future, despite rapidly falling oil revenues. As the Premier announced today, we are taking the necessary time to make tough, but thoughtful budget decisions, in keeping with the priorities Albertans elected our government to deliver: investing in families and communities, living within our means and opening new markets for Alberta’s resources. Minister Horner will table the Budget on March 7.”

Calgary Mayor Naheed Nenshi says he is worried the province will cut funds for capital grants, grants the city uses for infrastructure projects.
