Revelstoke avalanche kills one skier

One skier is dead after being caught in an avalanche outside of Revelstoke.

The avalanche struck in the Greely Lake area, outside the boundaries of the Revelstoke Mountain Resort.

“The slide itself was witnessed by Revelstoke Mountain Resort staff and they called RCMP in Revelstoke,” says Cpl. Dan Moskaluk with the RCMP’s South East District.

“It’s our understanding that there was a group of skiers that were skiing well into the backcountry. Part of the group was buried by the avalanche, with three skiers of the group buried. The other skiers that were unharmed in the avalanche rescued their friends. Two were located and rescued, uninjured. Unfortunately, the third that was buried was located deceased,” he explains.

Moskaluk says there are plans for search and rescue technicians and Revelstoke RCMP to return to the location in the backcountry on Saturday to recover the body.

He says police don’t know if the skiers had entered into the backcountry via the resort.

People at the resort say the victim was a man, but it’s not known where the group of skiers was from.
